Life Legacy


Services for Essie Wilkes Hilbun, age 97, of Dublin will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Springdale Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Northview Cemetery. Rev. Sonny Wilkes, Rev. Paul Wilkes, and LT Dave Wilkes, USN, (Retired) will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour. Mrs. Hilbun died Thursday, November 8, 2012 at Serenity Place. She had been a resident at Dublinaire Nursing Home for the past six years.

Mrs. Hilbun was a long time Sunday School teacher at Saxon Heights Baptist Church. She loved singing in the church choir, fishing and cooking. She enjoyed flowers, dogs, and talking about old times. Mrs. Hilbun loved her church and family, especially the children.

Mrs. Hilbun was predeceased by her parents, James Gordon Wilkes and Lelia McLendon Wilkes; husband, John Bennet Hilbun; sons, J. B. Hilbun, Jr. and William Benson (Billy) Harden; two infant children; and seven brothers and a sister.

Auntie Essie and Uncle John were like a second mother and father to nephews, Jeff, Mike, and David Wilkes, who lived in the Saxon Heights neighborhood along with them.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Lucille Wilkes, Willena Wilkes, both of Dublin, and Pearl Corley, of Columbia, SC; seven nephews; nine nieces; many great nephews and nieces; and first cousin, Audie Fulford.

David Wilkes, Jr., Blake Wilkes, Bryon Wilkes, Johnny Bearden, Billy Mallory, and Michael Wilkes will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Hilbun was a member of Springdale Baptist Church.
