Mary Douglas Obituary

Mary Quarles Douglas, age 91, of Dublin, GA, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019.  Funeral services will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Jefferson Street Baptist Church in Dublin, with interment services following at Dublin Memorial Gardens.  The Rev. Jay Moore will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 2 pm until 3 pm.

Mary was born February 10, 1928, in Ball Ground, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Frank Quarles and the late Georgia Worley Quarles.  She graduated from Berry College in Rome where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. While attending Berry, Mary met and then married Dubignion (Dub) Douglas on September 3, 1950. They moved to Macon, where Dub completed his law degree at Mercer University. During that time Mary worked at the Georgia Academy for the Blind and the Mercer Library.  In 1951, they moved to Dublin. She taught Home Economics at Cedar Grove School and was a substitute teacher at Dublin High School.

A member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church, Mary served on various church committees, including the YWA, WMU, GAs, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School. She was director of the Senior Adult Sunday School Department for 12 years, Past President of the Dublin Service League, Past President of the Dublin Federated Garden Clubs, and a charter member and three-time Past President of the Green Acres Garden Club. In 1982, she was honored as “Woman of the Year” for Laurens County.

An avid gardener and floral designer, Mary presented numerous programs for Garden Clubs in Dublin and throughout the state. Four of her designs were selected for publication in the State Garden Club’s “Garden Gateways” annual calendar. After moving to Addington Place Assisted Living in 2013, she continued nurturing her passion for flowers by creating fresh flower arrangements throughout the home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Honorable Dubignion Douglas; a brother, Tom Quarles; and sister, Elizabeth Quarles Carlton. Survivors include one sister, Evelyn England (Ed) of Marietta, GA; children, Susan Douglas Carr (Bryan) of Dublin; Lynn Douglas Kaminskas (Bob) of Fleming Island, FL; and Steve Anthony Douglas (Susan) of Macon, GA; grandchildren Ben Kaminskas, Douglas Kaminskas, Scott Carr, Kevin Carr, Samuel Douglas, Mary Helen Douglas, and Luke Douglas; and two great-grandchildren, Jayden and Isabella Carr.

The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Addington Place for their loving care.
