Ronnie Mathis was born on March 2, 1956. He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy and Rachel. He departed for Heaven on October 12, 2019. He is survived by his wife Sherry, to whom he has been married to for 34 wonderful years.
Ronnie made an honest living, buying, raising, and selling livestock. He loved working with animals and his hobby was helping, Dr. Bell, the veterinarian, as much as he could. He spent his weeks at various livestock sales. Life was good to Ronnie. He was a great athlete in high school. He enjoyed his time as a running back for Butler High School in Augusta, Georgia before attending Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Georgia.
He loved traveling with his wife Sherry. Most of their trips were to pursue Ronnie’s passions. He loved to ski, in snow or water. He loved to sky dive, scuba dive, and just about anything else that required a chance getting hurt. Ronnie’s biggest accomplishment was accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a faithful member of Bethsaida Baptist Church. HE was a member of the choir and God’s grace radiated from him when singing praises of worship to his Lord. See, he loved Jesus!
Ronnie’s biggest passion was working with youth. He poured his heart and soul into each child that would listen. He hoped the stories of his life experiences would help prevent them from going down some of the paths that he did. If you knew Ronnie, he witnessed to everyone he met. Ronnie was saved by Grace, and wanted everyone to have that same Grace.
Ronnie was far from perfect, like the rest of us. He had an eye for the world. Ronnie spoke at church one Sunday morning; his opening statement was, “I saw the devil at Wal-Mart yesterday”. We were all wondering what he would say next. He said, “The devil I saw had on a short red dress and had long pretty hair”. His whole sermon was on that devil; it wasn’t ugly or scary but pleasing to the eye and flesh. “It is only through God’s teachings of the Bible that we know to run from the sin in this world. “
Ronnie will be truly missed, not only in the community but by his Church. There will be an open spot in the Choir. There will be an open spot in his Sunday School class. There will be an open spot in Discipleship training. There will be one less seasoned adult to mentor our youth and an open spot in the congregation. But there is one more, in Heaven, worshiping the King!
The family will receive friends from 11:00AM until 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Bethsaida Baptist Church. Services will follow at noon on Wednesday with burial to follow at Dublin Memorial Gardens. Dr. Brad Ball will officiate.
