Warren Rutherford Carswell, Sr.

Funeral services for Warren Rutherford Carswell, Sr., will be held Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Pine Forest United Methodist Church in Dublin, Georgia. A private burial will follow. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Wes Moye will officiate. 

Warren, affectionately known as “Tunk” to family and friends, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018, at Serenity Hospice in Dublin, Georgia, after a brief illness.Tunk was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson Slappey Carswell, Sr. and Hazel Warren Carswell. 

Tunk was born on December 3, 1933, in Dublin, Georgia. He graduated from Dublin High School in 1952 and was attending the University of Georgia when he received his draft notice in 1957. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957-1959 stationed in Korea. Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to the University of Georgia to complete his education and graduated in 1959.  

Tunk was employed with General Adjustment Bureau in Pensacola, Florida, for approximately one year before being transferred to Brunswick, Georgia. He returned to Dublin in 1961 to marry the love of his life, Glennetta Wilkinson Carswell, with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage on February 5, 2018.

Tunk worked 13 years with General Adjustment Bureau before starting his own insurance adjusting business, Carswell & Co., where he worked until his retirement in 2010.

 Tunk’s quick wit and love for life earned him many lifelong friendships over the years. He loved a good game of golf or tennis with his friends, and was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. Spending time with his family brought him the most joy. Tunk also had a deep love for classic cars and spent many hours restoring a red 1965 Mustang convertible with the help of his grandsons. You would often find the boys tinkering with the car, keeping it road ready for Tunk to enjoy driving around town.The world was certainly a better place with him in it, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

 Tunk belonged to the Kappa Alpha Fraternity at the University of Georgia and was a former member of Dublin Rotary Club, University of Georgia Alumni Association, and National Mustang Club. He was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Glennetta Carswell of Dublin; daughter, Laura (Chris) Brantley of Dublin, and son, Rev. Warren R. Carswell, Jr., of Roanoke, Virginia; five grandsons, Stephen Osburn of Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Osburn of Birmingham, Alabama, Brian (Sarah) Osburn of Dublin, Georgia, Ben (Whitney) Osburn of Dublin, Georgia, and Seth Carswell of Roanoke, Virginia; one great-grandson, Owen Osburn, of Dublin, Georgia; one brother, Dr. Nelson S. (Betty Ann) Carswell of Dublin, Georgia; and several nephews and nieces.
