Obituary

Services for Amy Louise Dixon Cannon, age 89 of Dublin, will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 9, 2011 at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Dr. Jack Key and Rev. Jimbo Dominey will officiate. Mrs. Cannon passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Mrs. Cannon was a member of First United Methodist Church for 65 years. She served as a member of the Pilot Club of Dublin for 38 years, serving as president in 1976. She was honored as Pilot of the Year in 1981, Dublin-Laurens St. Patrick's Festival Woman of the Year in 1978, Senior Citizen of the Year in 2004 and an Honorary Leprechaun with the Order of the Blarney Stone in 1974. She worked many years with events such as the Leprechaun Contest, Grand Ball, and Feast with Fashion. Mrs. Cannon was very involved in her church. She was a member of the Chancel Choir, Circle VII, United Methodist Women, Charter Member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, Hospitality Chairman for 8 years, Sunday School Teacher with the 3-5 year olds for 42 years and served on several other committees and boards. For 58 years, Mrs. Cannon volunteered at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center accumulating over 6,000 volunteer hours. She recognized and honored the community's Gold Star Mothers during the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies held there. Mrs. Cannon was recognized with WMAZ Channel 13 "From the Heart Award" for her volunteer and community service in 2001. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Louis Dixon and Mildred Irene Smith Dixon, husband John Claxton Cannon, Sr., two brothers, L.M. Dixon and Allen Carlton Dixon, six sisters, Belva Maddox, Marie Mercer, Florine McCrimmon, Ruby Edenfield, Annie Ruth Beacham Graham and Alma Smith. Survivors include her two sons, John Claxton (Cristol) Cannon, Jr. and Robert Jeffery (Cheryl) Cannon both of Dublin; three grandsons, John Claxton Cannon III of Milledgeville, Camden Taylor Cannon and Ridge Jeffery Cannon both of Dublin; two granddaughters, Candice Lynne Cannon and Rachel Irene Cannon both of Dublin and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be John C. Cannon III, Camden T. Cannon, Ridge J. Cannon, Andrew Dopson, Scott Dopson and Todd Calhoun. Honorary Escorts will be members of the Pilot Club of Dublin, First United Methodist Church Friendship Sunday School Class and the St. Patrick's Festival Women of the Year. The family will receive friends at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. They may be contacted at the home of Jeff and Cheryl Cannon, 110 Cheek Drive in Dublin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Renovation Fund, P.O.
