Obituary

Betty Joyce Coleman Brown age 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 5, 2026. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2026 in the Mary Whitaker Townsend Chapel of Townsend Funeral Home at 1:00 with visitation held on hour prior. The burial will follow at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.  Reverend Jimmy Napier and the Reverend Kevin Tanner officiating.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jerrell C. Brown and her parents Joseph Henry Coleman and Mary Ethel Wyatt Coleman, two brothers, William Truitt Coleman and Willard Wayne Coleman, sister-in-law, Betty Lou Coleman, nephew Calvin Moses and Aaron (Sissy) Maddox.  She is survived by her sons, Steve (Gail) Brown and Jeff (Lynne) Brown. Granddaughters, Pritchie (Christian) Gauthier and Stevie Rae (Josh) Branch. Great grandchildren, Murphy Jo Branch, Murray James Branch, Hardy Jay Branch. Step grandchildren, Sophia Gauthier, Dakota, Peyton "Jon", and Ethan (Keisha) Dennis. Step great-grandchildren, Ava, Leiane and Kye Dennis. Several nieces and nephews whom she loved and who meant so much to her. Patti (Mike) Falco, DeWitt (Jan) Moses, Wanda (Donny) Allen, Kay (Ken) Hughes, Sandra (Joel) Chue, Linda (Malcom) Browning, Beverly (Monty) Garrett, Angie (Emory) Adams, and Bonnie (Jeff) Green. Also, her cousin Durwood Wyatt.  Her children and grandchildren described her as the most loving individual that God has ever put on this Earth.

Mrs. Brown was a 1956 graduate of Lowery High School where she was valedictorian and the recipient of various other superlatives including Friendliest, Most Likely to Succeed and Most Athletic. She and Jerrell were blessed with two athletically gifted sons, she continued to be an avid sports enthusiast and was involved in their activities. She was a dedicated supporter of the West Laurens Athletic Booster Club where she served as the first woman President. It was under her leadership and support of several dedicated members, that a debt-free football stadium and baseball field became a reality during the 1974 and 1975 school year.

Mrs. Brown began her VA career as a ward clerk, then advanced to Secretary to the Chief of Supply Service and later advanced to Secretary to the Chief of Staff all prior to being selected to the position of Administrative Officer, Psychiatry Service from which she retired from in September 30, 1997.  She served on the Board of Directors for the Federal Employees Credit Union when it was based at the Dublin VA Medical Center. She also worked Memorial Hospital in the Insurance Department as a Supervisor and also the Manager for Dr. Fred J. Coleman. She served on various Laurens County Commission committees as appointed including the organizational phases of The Laurens County Recreation Committee which is now the Dublin-Laurens Recreation Authority. She is an alumni member of the Leadership Dublin-Laurens class of 1994-1995.

Mrs. Brown loved the Lord and was devoted to His service. She loved her family and was always supportive and available whenever needed. She was a faithful and active member of Rock Springs Baptist Church where she served in many positions over the years that included Discipleship Training Director, Sunday School Teacher, Moderator of Fifth District Sunday School Rallies and Chairperson of numerous church committees. She also served twelve years as Sunday School Director.

Pallbearers will be DeWitt Moses, Mike Falco, Christian Gauthier, Billy Mathis, Brian Mathis and Josh Branch. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Wright, John Robinson, Josh Smith, Brock Smith, Dan Rowe and Dubby Coffey.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2575 Rock Springs Road, Dublin, GA 31021 or the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, 9420 Blackshear Highway, Baxley, GA 31513.
