Following his graduation from Dudley High School, Mr. Woodard started working at Bibb Manufacturing Company in Macon. He was later drafted by the Army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and was stationed in Hawaii. Mr. Woodard continued to proudly serve his great country until World War II had ended, and then he returned to Dublin and resumed his previous job at Bibb Manufacturing Company. Several years later, Mr. Woodard began serving other Veterans as a nurse's aide and later as a physical therapist assistant at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin. At the age of fifty-five and after twenty-eight years of service with the VA, Mr. Woodard retired. He continued to work at home by farming various crops, including corn, peanuts, and soy beans, as well as raising Black Angus cattle. Retiring after 25 years of service, Mr. Woodard worked in the community as a board member of Oconee Electric Membership Corporation in Dudley.
Mr. Woodard was born in Dublin to the late Mr. and Mrs. James Augustus Woodard. He was preceded in death by a brother, Perry Woodard, and two grandsons, Luke and Caleb Woodard. After his service during World War II, he married his beautiful bride, Mildred Woodard, of Dublin. They have been happily married for over sixty-seven years. Together Mr. and Mrs. Woodard raised four boys in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, as instructed in Ephesians. Their sons, Clinton (Nancy) Woodard of Metter, Larry (Freda) Woodard of Dublin, Jerry (Dyona) Woodard of Dublin, and Danny (Renea) Woodard of Loganville, were raised in Oconee Baptist Church, where Mr. Woodard served as deacon until his passing. He was an active member of this church for over 75 years. Mr. Woodard was called "Granddaddy" by his seven cherished grandchildren: Angela (Brian) Lewis of Duluth, Ryan (Michelle) Woodard of Tifton, Julie Wade of Pooler, Erica (Brian) Bowles of Dublin, Josh (Jenny) Woodard of Dublin, Nathan (Seth) Woodard-Persily of Atlanta, and Brandon (Jodi) Woodard of Atlanta. Mr. Woodard loved to take his grandchildren fishing and hunting, a tradition that he continued with his thirteen great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
