Obituary

On February 16, 2017, Doyle Freeman (Chief) Brown, 83, relinquished his long and courageous battle with cancer. Doyle was born on October 28, 1933 to Fannie (Pierce) and Henry Freeman Brown. He worked at Robins Air Force Base and retired after 34 years. Doyle is a graduate of Middle Georgia College and Georgia College and is also an US Army Veteran. Doyle was a faithful lifelong member of Dudley Baptist Church and a member of the Duggan Weaver Sunday School Class. He previously served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and training union director. He was a member of Carpenters for Christ and traveled on several mission trips. In addition, Doyle was an active member of the Dudley community, serving three terms on the city council. He also coached girls' softball and was the president of the Dudley Community Civic Club. Doyle was a "jack of all trades" and could build and fix most anything. However, other than family and God, his greatest passion in life was the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department where he was Chief for over 50 years, the longest serving chief in the state. He completed Firefighter Mods 1 and 2 at the age of 75. Doyle was also a member of the Laurens County Fire Honor Guard. Doyle attended numerous fires, auto accidents, and medical emergencies during his service and was fondly known to fellow firefighters, law enforcement, and many others as "Chief". Doyle is survived by his wife of 57 years Nellierene (Wilkinson) Brown, daughters: Glynis (Bryan) Wampler of Dudley, GA; Guynelle (Donna) Brown of Las Vegas, NV; and Kim Brown of Dunwoody, GA; sisters: Opal Sirmans and Mary Senie Pipkin, both of Cochran, GA; and brother Malvern (Natalie) Brown of Traveler's Rest, SC; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents. Services will be held Monday, February 20th at 2pm at Dudley Baptist Church in Dudley, GA. Pallbearers will be the Laurens County Fire Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 19th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home, 215 West Jackson Street, Dublin, GA 31021. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department at P.O. Box 213, Dudley, GA 31022.
