Obituary

Services for Emmett "Doc" Claxton Leverette, age 85 of Dublin, will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 22, 2014, in the chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Dublin Memorial Gardens. Rev. Darren Talley, Ted Jarriel, Marshal McDuffie, and Jimmy Wyatt will officiate. The family will receive friends before the service beginning at 1:00PM. Mr. Leverette died Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Serenity Hospice following a lengthy illness. Born November 25, 1928 in Dublin, Mr. Leverette was a resident of Laurens County all his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Carlton and Victoria Stinson Leverette; brother, Otis Carlton Leverette; sister, Maggie Mae Leverette Alligood; and granddaughter, Melissa (Missy) Peterson McDonald. Mr. Leverette was a member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church and Sunday School. He retired from Forstmann in 1995 after forty-seven years of service. He stayed home a couple of years and later went back to work at Kroger and retired from there after eleven years. Mr. Leverette was a devoted Christian husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved all those around him, both family members and friends, and had a special and close relationship to each. He loved all sports, especially football. He played football for Dublin High School and his team won the sixth district championship in 1945 under Coach Chilly Penn. The team was one of only two teams in the state to be undefeated that year. As a father, he helped coach in the "Little League" and the "Babe Ruth' in the sixties. Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Helen Hanson Leverette; children, Sheryll Leverette (George) Peterson, Glenn (Susan) Leverette,; grandchildren, Jason (Liza) Leverette, Catelyn Peterson; great-grandchildren, Brian and Peyton Leverette , all of Dublin; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces. Bobby Davidson, Edsel Padgett, Jimmy Ray Wyatt, Frank Cook, Dee Cullen, and Ted Jarriell will serve as pallbearers, his Sunday School Class and former employees of J.P. Stevens will serve as honorary escort. The family may be contacted at the residence. In lieu of flowers, a memorial to him has been set up at the Bank of Dudley.
