The Honorable Dubignion Douglas departed this life on the 13th day of September at 87 years of age. Born May 24, 1924 in Ocilla, Georgia, he was the eldest son of Thomas Henry and Gladys Tucker Douglas. Judge Douglas was an honor graduate of Ocilla High School, where he played on the Class "B" High School All-State Basketball Team in 1942.
Upon graduation, he served in World War II's European Theater of Operations for the Occupation Army as an infantryman. Attaining the rank of Sergeant, Douglas was awarded the expert Rifleman badge and good conduct medal. Following his duties in the service, Douglas attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia and transferred to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, where he received a Juris Doctor degree from the Walter F. George School of Law in 1950. He married Mary Quarles of Ball Ground, Georgia, on September 3, 1950. They were married 61 years.
After graduation from law school, Judge Douglas entered the private practice of law with the late Paul J. Jones, Jr. in Dublin, Georgia for 15 years. Thereafter, he practiced with Morris S. Robertson until his appointment to the bench on January 1, 1981, serving Laurens, Johnson, Treutlen and Twiggs Counties as part of the Dublin Judicial Circuit until August 1, 1993. While practicing law, he served two terms in the Georgia Legislature from 1966 to 1970, representing Johnson and Laurens Counties. After taking Senior status as a judge in 2003, he served throughout the state as a fill-in for other judges.
A member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church for more than 50 years, he taught Sunday School and chaired many committees, including the Board of Deacons.
His civic activities included the Dublin Exchange Club, serving as President and District Governor; chairman of the Laurens County Cancer Society; and Board of Governors for the State Bar of Georgia.
Judge Douglas loved bluegrass music performed by Dr. Ralph Stanley, the late Red Foley, and the late Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, with whom he performed at the White House for President Jimmy Carter in 1980. He also enjoyed gardening and completed the Master Gardener program.
He is survived by his wife Mary, and three children--Susan Douglas (Bryan) Carr of Gainesville, Florida, Lynn Douglas (Bob) Kaminskas of Orange Park, Florida, and Stephen Anthony (Susan) Douglas of Macon, Georgia. Also surviving are seven grandchildren—Scott and Kevin Carr, Ben and Douglas Kaminskas, and Samuel, Mary Helen and Luke Douglas. He is also survived by two brothers, Raymond Douglas of Macon, and Thomas Wendell Douglas of Madison, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his sister Karleen Douglas DeVane.
Visitation will be at Townsend Funeral Home today, September 14, from 5 to 7 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held tomorrow, September 15, at 3 pm at Jefferson Street Baptist Church, preceded by graveside services for family and friends at Dublin Memorial Gardens at 1 pm.
