Biography Iola Cheatham Nelson of Dublin, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nancy Claxton, Dublin, GA. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Douglas Cheatham and Iola Girtman Cheatham, two sisters, Mrs. Flovrie Cheatham Yates and Mrs. Louise Cheatham Ketterbaugh. She was the widow of Elmer Wiley Nelson of Cedartown.
Iola was born in Macon, June 23, 1920. She attended Alexander II Grammer School and graduated from Miller-Lanier High School, Macon and West Baltimore General Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. She was retired as a nurse from the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center, Dublin.
Mrs. Nelson loved to travel to foreign countries including, China, Egypt, Japan, Canada, Spain, France, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Austria, Malaysia, Norway, Russia, several South American Countries, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Mexico, Italy, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Syria and Porto Rico.
She is survived by her children, Nancy Elizabeth Jenkins Claxton, Michael Anthony Fuller , grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Claxton (Roy Charles) Castillo, Jonathan Manning Claxton, Benjamin Zachariah (Haley Hinton) Claxton, Michael Anthony (Christie Stanley) Fuller, niece JoAn Ketterbaugh Childres and a nephew Joe F. Ketterbaugh and two great nieces, Missy and Robyn Patrick.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, Dublin at 11:00 AM Thursday, April 14th with visitation at the church at 10:00 AM. Dr. Cliff Morris will officiate. An interment service will be held at 3:00 PM at Macon Memorial Park.
Jonathan Claxton, Benjamin Claxton, Michael Fuller, Jr., Roy Charles Castillo, E. B. Claxton III,Zack Woodard, and Scott Bourassa will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Laurens County, 205 North Franklin Street, Dublin, GA 31021 or to the Piano Fund, First Baptist Church, 405 Bellevue Avenue, Dublin, 31021.
