Services for James A. Layton, age 96 of Dublin, will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be before the service at 9:00 AM in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Dr. Cliff Morris will officiate. He passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. Mr. Layton was the son of the late William Tom Layton and Etta Lavada Lindsey Layton. He was also preceded in death by four brothers; Louis Ray Layton, William Carl Layton, Wade Lamar Layton, and Thomas Fullmore Layton. Mr. Layton graduated from Tennille High School. After graduation, he worked with R.C. Cola in Swainsboro. He joined the United States Air Force in 1941. After being discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1945, he worked as a salesman at International Harvester Dealership in Tennille. September 1956 he owned the International Harvester Dealership in Dublin until retirement in 1989. Mr. Layton was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dublin since 1956, a member of the Forum Sunday School Class, and ordained as a Deacon at Tennille Baptist Church 1948 before membership at First Baptist Church in Dublin. He was a member of the Dublin Rotary Club since 1958. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth Page Layton of Dublin; daughter, Margaret Layton Nixon (George) of Spartanburg, SC; son, Johnny L. Layton (Kathy) of Dublin; six grandchildren, Scott Jones of Laurens, SC, Jay Layton of Atlanta, Jason Spears of Austin, TX, John Nixon of Ashville, NC, Ben Nixon of Asheville, NC and Joseph Spears of Michi, TN; two granddaughters, Page Davis (Jim) of Spartanburg, SC and Summer Bailey (Matt) of Valdosta; six great grandchildren, Layton Davis, Elizabeth Jones, Asa Davis, Josh Jones, Pearl Spears, and June Spears; brother, Cecil Herbert Layton of Cochran; many beloved nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the Forum Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hands of Ruth or the building fund of First Baptist Church 405 Bellevue Ave. Dublin, GA 31021.
