Jesse Carson Knight, Sr., age 67, passed away on April 7, 2020. A private family graveside service, due to Covid-19, will be held at Dublin Memorial Gardens on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Brad Sanders will officiate.
Mr. Knight graduated high school from Bibb County School System and then started in the law enforcement career in January of 1975. During his time servicing in the Twiggs County Sheriff Department, he was awarded many awards, such as: Outstanding Investigator Award, Outstanding Service Award (10 years), a member of the city council for four terms, Assistant Fire Chief, involved in community Leadership, and was a certified law enforcement officer in 1978.
He started working in the Laurens County Sheriff's Department in 1988. Shortly afterwards, he was promoted to Captain in 1989 and assisted in the new jail construction. In 1990, Knight was promoted to Major (Chief Deputy), where he was in charge of 125 deputies, policies and procedures, hiring and firing; and stayed there until 2004. During his time there he earned many awards, such as: Outstanding Officer of the Year (1990 and 1991), Ex-Vice President of Peace Officers of Georgia – elected by law enforcement and corrections officers of Georgia, Prestigious life time membership of Peace Officers of Georgia, Vice President of Georgia Jail Association, Board member of Dublin Judicial Drug Taskforce, Chairman for American Cancer Society Relay for Life Award, Hero Red Cross, numerous other awards, over 1,500 hours of training certifications, and a hostage negotiator.
When Mr. Knight started working in the State Department of Georgia, he was an investigator for the office of the Public Defenders. He earned the Outstanding Service Award for five and ten years of service. Then he retired in 2017.
In Mr. Knight's church life, he was a member at First Independent Methodist Church. He served as a chairman of the Board of Stewards and several other committees. He was a song leader and Program Director.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Morris Knight and Jessie Bernice Easterly Knight; and nephew, Carl Knight, Jr., and brother, Doug Knight.
Jesse Knight, Sr. was survived in life by his wife, Mary Susan Knight, of Dublin; son, Jesse Carson Knight, Jr., of Savannah; daughters, Lindsay (Rod) Knight Shuman, of Macon, and Shana Knight, of Woodbridge, Virginia; grandchildren, Gracie Pounds and Aiden Pounds, of Macon, and Bethany Knight, of Woodbridge, Virginia; brother Carl (Judy) Knight, of Soperton; and sister, Rita Knight, of Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
