Services for Jessie Bernice Easterly Knight, age 84, of Savannah will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 18, 2014, in the chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Interment services will be private. Rev. Paul Brown will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 17, 2104, at the funeral home. Ms. Knight died Monday, September 15, 2014.
Ms. Knight, born in Yampa, CO on September 20, 1929, was the oldest of eight children born to Jesse Pinkerton Easterly and Opal Nellene Reece Easterly. A true cowgirl in the mountains of three hundred plus acres of land in upper Colorado, Ms. Knight's family worked the land for food, shelter, and survival in that harsh part of the country. Following graduation from Yampa School, she attended Colorado Springs College, where she met her future husband, William (Bill) Morris Knight.
Ms. Knight retired from Costal Correction Center, Savannah. Upon retirement, she pursued her passion of painting. She collaborated with Savannah College of Art and Design, attending lectures and classes and also attended Armstrong College, taking courses for her own gratification in photography, oceanography, psychology, and astrology. A lady of many talents, Ms. Knight participated in film festivals, sidewalk art festivals and many other art events, sold much of her art work paintings and oil portraits, wrote poetry and published several poems, played the guitar, harmonica, and violin, and led a Girl Scout Troop. She attended the First Independent Methodist Church of Dublin and White Bluff Methodist Church of Savannah.
Ms. Knight never faulted in her duties as a wife, mother, and good Christian for God's service.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ms. Knight was preceded in death by sisters, Phyllis Menken, Eunice Beard, Lenore Tupper, Dolores denBarber, Charlene Easterly; brother, Donald Easterly; and grandson, Carl E. Knight, Jr.
Survivors include her sister, Hazel Bell, children, Carl (Judy) Knight, Sr., of Soperton, Carson (Susan) Knight, Sr. of Dublin, LaRita Ruth Knight, of Jacksonville Beach, FL; grandchildren, Shana Lea Knight, of Virginia, Tony Denard, of Maryland, Jesse Carson Knight, Jr., Lindsey Knight, both of Dublin; great grandchildren, Aden Morris Pounds, Gracie S. Pounds, both of Dublin, and Bethany Knight, of Virginia; fifteen nieces and nephews.
Ben Allen, Ted Calhoun, Don Bradshaw, Jerry Warren, Drew Watson, Clay Tapley will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Fellowship of the First Independent Methodist Church and the staff of the Public Defender's Office.
