Mary was born on January 4, 1923 in Soperton. A 1940 graduate of Dublin High School, Mary worked at the fuse plant in Macon during World War II. She married James M. Savage in 1942 and moved to Shewmake on the Walke Dairy Road, and lived and worked on the Savage family farm while raising her son, Jimmy, and daughter, Karen. In 1959, Mary began working as a secretary for the Dudley School, where she loved the children and enjoyed interacting with students. She enrolled in business correspondence courses to prepare for a beginning career as bookkeeper for the Laurens County Board of Education. During her thirty year career, Mary served with five different county school superintendents and was proud to be a part of the Laurens County School System. Following retirement, she was a Pink Lady volunteer at Fairview Park Hospital for almost twenty years. Following husband James Savage's death in 1993, Mary was married to Grady L. Screws in 1994. They enjoyed traveling and camping during their years together.

Mary loved her church and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was the oldest living member of Dudley United Methodist Church. Mary was devoted to her family. She cherished the time spent with nieces and nephews on the family farm, especially during the summer and holidays. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt.

Mary was preceded in death by her husbands, James "Jim" M. Savage, Sr. and Grady L. Screws; parents, Jim Henry Weaver and Doshie Peacock Weaver; brothers, Clyde J. Weaver, and James Corris Weaver; and grandson, Jason Scott Savage.
