Obituary

Services for Myrtle Swymer Asbell Gregory, age 94, of Dublin will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 26, 2012 in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Rev. Cole Morris and Rev. Darren Talley will officiate. Mrs. Gregory was the daughter of the late J.W. Swymer and the late Josephine Knight Register Swymer. She grew up in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School in 1935. She moved to Dublin in the early 1940's. Myrtle was a military wife and traveled frequently, living in Rapid City, South Dakota, Guam and Valdosta before returning to Dublin in the 1960's. She was a member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, NARFE, Daylily Club, Woodman of the World and the Laurens County Home Demonstration Council. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Emmett Asbell and James L. Gregory; brothers, Sylvester Swymer, Marbon Swymer, Monroe Swymer and sisters, Lessie Register, Alma Dixon, Bertie Virginia Sheppard and Ethel Sheffield. Mrs. Gregory passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Serenity Place. She is survived by a son, Arnold (Margo) Gregory of Dublin; two daughters, Jackie Sue (Willie) Oglesby of Dublin and Sylvia (Mike) Monroe of Cobbtown; four granddaughters, Shannon (Lyle) Wilkes of Lyons, Brandy (James) Bray of Vidalia, Heather (Calvin) Smith of Dublin and Daisy (Mark) Thigpen of Minter; three grandsons, Mike (Tina) Kirkland of Houston, TX, Danny (Marie) Kirkland of Orange, TX, and John Gregory of Dublin; five great-granddaughters, Kelly Curtis of Houston, TX, Jessica and Brittany Kirkland both of Orange, TX, Ivey Thigpen of Minter and Maddie Wilkes of Lyons; seven great-grandsons, Tymothee Kirkland (US Army at Ft. Campbell, KY), Chase Kirkland of Orange, TX, Rylan and Cayden Thigpen both of Minter, Tyler and Landon Bray both of Vidalia and Jaden Christopher Smith of Dublin; sister, Willene Smith of Cochran and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Sonny Drum, Dan Dixon, Andy Cullens, Mark Thigpen, Larry Wilkes, Jr., and Mike Thigpen. The family may be contacted at the Laurens County Home Demonstration Council, 1307 North Jefferson Street in Dublin. They will receive friends on Monday from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to a charity of choice.
