Nan Johnette Thompson Miller, age 89, of Dublin, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 10, 2017.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home in Dublin, Georgia, with Rev. Wes Moye and Dr. Joel Dent officiating. Burial will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service.
Nan was born in Montgomery County, Georgia, on November 18, 1927. She was the oldest of four children of the late Marian Estelle Still Thompson and John Wardlaw Thompson. She grew up in Reidsville, Georgia and graduated from Reidsville High School.
In 1943 Nan joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corp and attended nursing school at the University of Georgia and University Hospital. She was a member of the last graduating class to receive their RN degrees. When World War II ended, she was assigned to the Naval Hospital in Dublin. There she remained for the next thirty-seven years working in various positions as head nurse until her retirement in 1983. During that time as a young nurse, she met and married her husband of fifty-five years the late George Anderson Miller. After retirement Nan continued to work as a nurse in several medical facilities in the area.
Nan and George were Methodists and joined the group that chartered Pine Forest United Methodist Church. Other civic organizations that Nan belonged to were the Pilot Club of Dublin and the Order of the Blarney Stone. Professional organizations she was associated with were the American Nurses Association. Nan enjoyed visiting with her friends and those in her Ladies Fellowship Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents and husband, Nan is preceded in death by her son David John Miller, her brothers Donald (Pat) Thompson, Matthew Still Thompson sister & brother-in-law Grace T. and Pete Brown, brother and sister in-law Tom and Mary M. Alway, nephew John Michael Always, and son-in-law Kenneth Nix.
She is survived by daughters Monica M. Nix of Warner Robins, Marilyn M. Avant (Mike) of Macon, son Donald G. Miller (Katrina) of Dublin. Her grandchildren who called her Nana include Cody Avant and Ben Miller both of Atlanta, Brooke Miller of Washington, D.C., Taylor Nix, Tara Nix and great-granddaughter Emilia all of Warner Robins.
Her immediate nieces and nephews are Herb Brown (Gina), Bridget B. Welch (Johnny) of Reidsville, Diann Alway, Thomas Alway (Joyce) all of Wanaque, New Jersey, and several other nieces, nephews, and other close friends.
Pallbearers will be Ritchie Everly, Mark Middlebrooks, Barry Durden, Kenn Tanner, Herb Brown, and Johnny Welch. Honorary Pall bearers are Ike (Buddy) Thigpen Jr., Pat Thigpen, and Bill (Sidy) Middlebrooks.
