Obituary

Nannette Claxton Woodard, age 84, joined her Lord on Friday, May 8, 2015. Born September 15, 1930, in Dublin, GA, Nannette was preceded in death by her parents, M.Z. and Georgia Lou Claxton and her brother, M.Z. Claxton, Jr. She is survived by her children: Lydia Woodard Loyd (Neil) of Raleigh, NC, Wanda Woodard of Dublin, GA and Zac Woodard (Mary) of Dexter, GA; five grandchildren: Whitney Gann (Andrew) of Charlotte, NC, Garrett Loyd of Hookerton, NC, and Reece Woodard, Angel Long, and Josh Long of Dexter, GA; great-grandson, Bryson Gann of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law, Nancy Claxton; niece, Elizabeth Castillo (Roy); and nephews, John Claxton (Kelly) and Ben Claxton (Haley); and great-niece, Lillian Claxton. Nannette was a graduate of Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, GA with degrees in Voice and Religious Education. She was dedicated to her Lord, her family and serving others. She often recalled traveling, as a youth with her father, to churches throughout Laurens County and leading the music. Over the years, she continued her ministry. She served as Minister of Music at Jefferson Street Baptist, Rentz Baptist and Pinehurst Drive Baptist Churches and as soloist for Sunday services at the V.A. Center. A member of First Baptist, Dublin, Nannette was active in the Chancel Choir. She worked with the Laurens County Baptist Association to the lead music in revival services and Vacation Bible Schools in rural churches. Her gifted voice continued to bring joy to others as she sang at weddings and led hymn services at retirement and nursing homes. She was a soprano member of the Macon Civic Chorale, with which she had the honor of performing at New York's Carnegie Hall. She was also active in the Georgia Baptist Jubalheirs, a praise chorus of female music ministry leaders. Her tours with the Jubalheirs included concerts in Georgia, Northern Ireland and Germany. In serving others, Nannette was instrumental in establishing (for underprivileged children) the Moore Street Mission Kindergarten of the First Baptist Church where she also taught. Upon receiving her State of Georgia certification as a librarian, she worked for the Oconee, Ohoopee and Ocmulgee Regional Libraries as Adult Services and Talking Books Librarian. One of her joys was making visits across central Georgia to individuals in their homes and nursing homes and providing audio books to those with visual impairments. She also served as a summer missionary in Colorado. She loved children as evidenced by the love she showed her own children, as well as others. In addition to operating an in-home preschool for several years, she led two Girl Scout troops and directed summer Girl Scout day camps. At the Oconee Regional Library, she served as Children's Librarian. With a keen interest in landscape and plants, Nannette completed horticulture courses from the University of GA and opened Azalea Lane Nursery in Dublin. Here, she and her staff provided plants and landscaping advice for many middle Georgia residents. Nannette was also active in the community as a participant in Leadership Laurens, a District Director of AARP and a volunteer with the Dublin – Laurens County Chamber of Commerce. Her friends remember her of love of travel, in both the US and abroad, her enthusiasm for professional and college football and her zest for regular games of bridge. In death, as in life, Nannette helped others. She donated her body to medical research at the Medical College of GA of GRU. Although her body failed her in later years, her mind was sharp. She read her Bible and daily devotions. In some of her last personal notes, she wrote, "Rejoice! We will all be together again in Heaven because we love and believe in Jesus. Thank God! I am going ahead to join the others. We will wait for you. Then we'll all rise with the Lord in His glory. AMEN!" A celebration of life, memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 11,2015 at First Baptist Church, Dublin, GA. Visitation will be held an hour preceding the service and continue following the service. Townsend Brothers Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. Donations in Nannette's memory may be made to: Promise of Hope, P.O. Box 321, Dudley, GA 31022.
