Services for Robert Gerald "Bob" Maffett, age 92, of Dublin, will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Pine Forest United Methodist Church with burial following at Dublin Memorial Gardens. Rev. Wes Moye and Dr. Joel Dent will officiate. Visitation will be at the Church Sunday from 2:00 PM until the funeral hour. Mr. Maffett was born May 20, 1923, in Greenwood, SC, but grew up in Monroe, GA. He moved to Dublin in 1952. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Irene Reynolds Maffett, three sisters; Janet Maffett, Mary Jane Franks, and Sybel Patrick. Mr. Maffett joined the US Navy in 1942, serving in World War II in the Pacific theater of operations. He served on the USS Randal and the USS Sunnadin that included combat zones. He was discharged in 1946, but was called back into service (the Korean War) to Pearl Harbor and South Pacific, (Midway, Philippines, Manila, Iwo Jima and Okinawa and several islands below the international date line). He was in the harbor of Okinawa when the peace treaty was signed. After the peace treaty, served in Hong Kong, China. With pride and honor he served his country in the US Navy during two wars. Mr. Maffett was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church. He was retired from J.P. Stevens, and Forstmann. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty, a son and daughter in law, Mike and Suzan Maffett of Dublin, a daughter and son in law, Judy and John Frazier of Olive Branch, MS, six grandchildren; Michael (Natalie) Maffett of Dublin, Tom Maffett of Atlanta, Katie and Jacob Frazier of Olive Branch, MS, Maury (Misty) Beasley of Dublin, Gina Dee (Michael) Barker of Jefferson, GA, Six great grandchildren; Davis and Charlei Maffett, Ease and Suzanne Barker, and Braelee and Braceton Beasley, sister, Ruby Lee Reeves of Monroe, GA. Michael Maffett, Tom Maffett, Maury Beasley, Michael Barker, Louie Curry, Jr., Earl Morgan and Jacob Frazier will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to Pine Forest United Methodist Church We Care Group, 400 Woods Avenue, Dublin, GA 31021.
