Burial will be at Eatonton Memorial Park in Eatonton, Georgia. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to each service. Mrs. Phillips was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on May 21, 1921. She was the daughter of the late George G. Kreidler, Sr. and the late Helen Sassaman Kreidler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stoy R. Phillips, and her brother, John W. Kreidler, Sr. Mrs. Phillips passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on September 9, 2013. Mrs. Phillips was a retired educator. She graduated with honors from Kutztown State Teachers College in Kutztown, Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Education, and a minor in Library Science. While teaching in her first years in Pennsylvania, she met her husband who was in the U.S. Army and they married and moved to Georgia in 1945. After living several years in Winder and Madison, they relocated to Eatonton in 1955, where they made their home and raised their children. Mrs. Phillips taught 4th and 6th grades at Eatonton Grammar School for a number of years before taking the position of Reading Specialist for the Putnam County School System. She was a dedicated teacher and continued her education by obtaining her Masters and Education Specialist degrees from Georgia State College for Women and University of Georgia respectively. Eatonton was home for Mrs. Phillips for 37 years. Her friends there surely remember her as a woman of faith who loved her church, First Baptist of Eatonton, where she was a member of the Chancel Choir and taught Sunbeams and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Putnam-Jasper County Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional educators' organization. She also enjoyed volunteering as a Pink Lady at Putnam General Hospital and loved traveling with her friends upon her retirement. After being involved in a serious automobile accident in 1992, she came to live in Dublin with her daughter, Sue Ann, and family. She enjoyed singing in the senior adult choir at Jefferson Street Baptist Church for many years while her health permitted. She was a member of the Dublin-Laurens County Retired Educators Association. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Dublin, Georgia. One of her greatest joys was sharing her love of reading, and she rarely came to visit her grandchildren without bringing countless books to share with them. She loved to sew and to knit and enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble, etc. She cared deeply for others, impacted the lives of many, and will be remembered for her humility and her love for the Lord. To know Mrs. Phillips was indeed to love her. Survivors are her daughters, Sue Ann (Johnny) Payne of Dublin and Helen Phillips of Atlanta; a brother, George G. Kreidler, Jr. (Barbara) of Fort Madison, Iowa; her grandchildren, Trellis Payne of Savannah, Lesley Payne of Dublin, Andy (Anna) Payne of Bainbridge, GA, and Cliff (Amy) Payne of Evans, Georgia; three great-grandsons, Henry Payne and Will Payne of Bainbridge, and Nathan Payne of Evans, and one great granddaughter, Rachel Payne of Evans, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Larry Brantley, Lynn Fordham, Glen Gillespie, Harry Graham, Dennis McLeroy, Andy Payne, Cliff Payne and Hank Segars. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Laurens County, GA, the First Baptist Church of Dublin, GA, or the First Baptist Church of Eatonton, GA. The family will be at the home of Johnny and Sue Ann Payne, 105 Beaver Run Drive, Dublin, Georgia. Please visit www.townsendfuneralhome.com to sign the online memorial register.
