Obituary

Thomas Perry Stewart, age 92 of Dublin, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Mr. Stewart was born February 21, 1923 in Camilla, Ga. He was the son of the late Perry Stewart and Jo Camp. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Smith Stewart and sister, Joyce Speck. He graduated from Valdosta High School and served his country during World War II as an aircraft mechanic with the Navy. Mr. Stewart was a graduate of Stetson University with further degrees from Peabody College and the University of Georgia. He coached football in Quitman, where his team won the 1949 state championship. He was Georgia coach of the year in Bremen in 1952 and also coached in Dublin from 1953 to 1958. He was inducted into the Valdosta/Lowndes County Sports Hall of Fame and The Dublin Touchdown Club Hall of Fame. He was principal of Dublin High School from 1958 until 1971, Assistant Superintendent 1971-1972 and Superintendent from 1972 until his retirement in 1983. He has been a member of First Baptist Church since 1953, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He loved his church, his family, all his many students from Dublin High School and the city of Dublin where he made his home and quietly served his community. He was a Life Member of the Kiwanis Club and a Hixon Fellow. Tom is the co-founder of the Bell-Stewart Scholarship Fund to encourage high school seniors to pursue education as their career choice. He served on the Laurens County Library Board, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, taught at the Chester prison and worked for the teachers and children of Georgia through the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. In the early 50's, he operated the city pool in Dublin and has taught numerous children to swim through the years including his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children Karen (Buddy) Haggard and Debbie (Mike) Cauley of Dublin, grandchildren, Kimberly (Blake) Voltz of Columbus, Mandi Jackson of Atlanta, Chris (Elisabeth) Cauley of Anderson, S.C. and Catherine Cauley of New Orleans, LA; great-grandchildren Bo, Gray and Haze Voltz of Columbus, Ren Jackson of Atlanta and Wilson and Millie Margaret Cauley of Anderson, S.C. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Dublin with burial to follow in Northview Cemetery. Rev. Al Daniell and Mr. Stanley Johnson will officiate. Pallbearers will be Stanley Johnson, Marvin Tarpley, Mike Wolfe, Jack Ballard, John Dominy, Lawrence Hall, Tommy Bobbitt, Thurston Branch and Ridley Parrish. Honorary pallbearers will be Coach Stewart's former players. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Laurens County Library, P.O. Box 100, Dublin, GA 31040 or to the Bell-Stewart Scholarship Fun c/o Farmer's State Bank, Dublin, GA 31021.
