Virginia Carolyn Corry Jones of Thundering Springs died on February 18th. She was born on October 26, 1923, to Lena Marabel Corry and Cecil Clay Corry in Greene County, Georgia, and reared on an estate there which had been family owned since a Revolutionary War Grant. Besides her parents, she was pre-deceased by an infant daughter in 1954; her husband, Paul Jackson Jones, Jr. in 1983; her brother Cecil Clay Corry, Jr. in 2011; his wife Eloise Lumpkin Corry in 2000, and his daughter, Carolyn Virginia (NAMESAKE) in 1999.
She was a graduate of Union Point High School and the Henry Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia with an A.B. Degree. While there she was a volunteer with the Baptist Religious Association. After graduation she worked in Washington, D.C., with the Armed Forces Security Agency and with the Weather Bureau of the National Security Agency until her marriage in 1953 when she moved to Dublin.
A proud and active member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church for more than 60 years, she taught a Sunday School class, worked in the Woman's Missionary Union, and served as Church Librarian.
For twenty-five years she was Treasurer of the Oconee Regional Library Board and served as Secretary of the Thundering Springs Association.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Harriett Jones Claxton, of Dublin and three nephews, (1) Cecil Clay Corry, III; (2) Charles Robert Corry, his wife Erika, and their daughters Eloise and Sarah Virginia (NAMESAKE), all of Arlington, Virginia; and (3) E.B. Claxton III, his wife Tammi, daughters Caroline Virgnia (NAMESAKE) and Chappell Locklair Claxton, and his step-children Candace and Cole Kimbell, all of Dublin.
She is also survived by three nieces: (1) Jessie Swinson Barbee, her husband Steve, their daughter Jennifer Stone and her husband Bubba and two sons, Seth and Beau, of Dublin; (2) Edna Swinson West, her husband Max, their son Eddie, his wife Elizabeth, and daughter Kate, all of Comer, and daughter Laura West Timmons, her husband, Stephen and their children, Mary Beth, Jackson, and Marcus of Moore, South Carolina; and (3) Paula Jones Claxton Bourassa, her husband Scott David and their four daughters Georgia Claire, Katie Belle, Abigail, and Anna Scott, all of Dublin.
The family will be happy to welcome friends on Friday night, February 21st at Townsend Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and would appreciate any memorials to Jefferson Street Baptist Church or to any charity.
The funeral service, be her request, will be at Dublin Memorial Gardens at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, February 22nd, with her pastor, Rev. Darren Talley officiating. Arrangements are by Townsend Brothers Funeral Home.
