Funeral services for Virginia Ward Knight, age 87, of Dexter, GA will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Dexter Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Rev. Calvin Halcomb and Rev. Charles Taylor will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 28, 2012 in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home.
Ms. Knight was born in Gordon, GA and worked in the office of the kaolin plant. Upon her marriage to D.W. (Bill) Knight, Jr., she moved to Dexter, GA. She was then employed by J.P. Stevens and later the Knight Banking Company. Ms. Knight was a member of Dexter Baptist Church, where she was a long time member of the choir. In her youth, she was an avid tennis player and, later in life, a fan of the Dexter Hornets basketball team.
She was the daughter of the late Corlie Ward and Jewell Ward.
Ms. Knight is survived by her two sons, D.W. (Jannell) Knight III of Dexter and John W. (Charlotte) Knight of Athens, GA; four grandchildren, Ryan Knight of Chicago, IL, John Knight, Jr., Charlotte K. Knight, and William Knight, all of Athens, Ga.; one great-grandchild, Jade Knight of Chicago, IL; and three sisters, Sharon Lord of Dexter, Brenda Loftus of State College, PA, and Jewell Bozeman of Macon, Ga.
Pallbearers will be Ben Knight, Wayne Lord, Jimmy Ward, Jerry Hatcher, Don Bryant, and Billy Warren.
