Obituary

William Rewel Wilkes, age 92, passed away June 15, 2012, at Serenity Hospice in Dublin. Funeral services will be held for Mr. Wilkes on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in the Jefferson Street Baptist Church Chapel. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m., followed by services at 11:00 a.m., and burial in Northview Cemtery. Rev Jay Moore and Rev. Darren Talley will officiate. Mr. Wilkes was born January 18, 1920, in Emanuel County. He was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinley and Lora Strange Wilkes; his wife of 69 &1/2 years, Johnnie Clyde Fennell Wilkes; his daughter, Linda Laverne Wilkes; his brothers, Larry, Grady and Charles Wilkes of Dublin; and one sister, Nellie W. Blalock, of Midville. He is survived by one son, William R. (Delmie) Wilkes, Jr., of Honduras; a granddaughter, Dedra (Richard) Holland, of Memphis, TN; three great-granddaughters; sisters, Nyla W. Fennell, of Rentz and Hazel W. (David) McNutt, of Augusta; brother, Gene (Shelba) Wilkes, of Swainsboro; sisters-in-law, Claire S. Wilkes and Patricia F. Wilkes, both of Dublin, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wilkes was a member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church since 1948, where he sang in the Cane and Able Choir. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes accompanied the Choir on many concert trips. He was a member of the L.B. Roberts Sunday School Class, and Mr. Rewel and Mrs. Johnnie Clyde worked with the youth program as chaperones and bus drivers on many youth activities. He loved the Lord, his church, his family and had many friends young and old. He lived at James Place for the past three years, where he was cared for by a loving and caring staff. Mr. Wilkes served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and saw action in the European Theater, and in some of the islands as well. Upon returning home after the war, he owned and operated a service station, a taxi service, and was an insurance agent for many years. Pallbearers will be Larry Simpson, Bernard King, Sonny Hall, Bobby Davidson, Benny Screws and Darrell Holliday. His Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jefferson Street Baptist Church. Townsend Brothers Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
