Billy Nathaniel Knowles, age 88, of Dublin, Georgia passed away on January 6, 2024, surrounded by family. Visitation will be held at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home, Dublin from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024, to be followed by procession and graveside service at Northview Cemetery at 11. He was preceded in death by his beautiful bride Mildred Coker Knowles on September 20, 2021. Dr. Cliff Morris will be officiating.
Billy was born in Chambers County, Alabama on October 13, 1935. He was the youngest of six children born to the late James Augustus and Katie Bell Knowles. His siblings Marjorie Brown, Leonard Clifford (LC) Knowles, James Aaron Knowles, Mary Estelle Knowles, and Marvin Laverne Knowles took great care of their baby brother as he grew up under their love and guidance.
He graduated from Valley High School in 1955. Following graduation, he married the love of his life Mildred Coker Knowles from Valley, Alabama. Mildred and Billy shared 64 years of the purest and truest love.
Billy was in the Army from 1960-1964 and was stationed in Alaska where he drove a tank guarding the outermost border between Russia and America. Upon his return, he graduated college from Auburn University with a degree in textiles and gained employment at JP Stevens in Louisville, Georgia. In 1977 Billy was transferred to Dublin, Georgia with the same company which later became Forstmann. He was employed with this company for 35 years and retired in 2001.
Billy was a long-time member of First Baptist Church Dublin and served faithfully as a deacon. He was in charge of the sound booth for many years and was instrumental in beginning the transition towards a more computerized system.
He was a devoted Paw-Paw to his two grandchildren and lived to see them smile. He was a member of the self-named “Romeo Club” that met every morning for coffee at McDonalds. These men would share a coffee and share stories of days gone by and encourage each other in their walk with the Lord as they were aging together. This time shared with friends gave him much joy. He enjoyed playing golf and proudly displayed a golden club he was awarded from Riverview Golf Club for a hole-in-one. In his young adulthood, he could be found coaching his daughter’s softball team for many years and supporting her through dance recitals and cheerleading events. He was an exceptional father.
Billy is survived by his only child, Shayna Knowles Morgan (Chris); grandson Kason Nathaniel Morgan and granddaughter Zae Elizabeth Morgan all from Dublin. He has left a strong legacy of what it means to truly place your faith in Jesus and walk with the Lord.
Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, 405 Bellevue Avenue, Dublin, Georgia 31021.
