CMSgt Eddie Lawton Achord, age 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 8, 2025.
Funeral services will be held at New Bethel Baptist Church on Saturday, May 10th at 3 pm, Dublin, GA. The Reverend Grady Mimbs and Reverend Ken Rodgers will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2 pm until the service hour at the church.
Mr. Achord was born on August 22, 1936, to the late Eddie Nathaniel Achord and Vera Oresta Woodard Achord. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Achord. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he served on many committees, was a member of the Adult II Sunday School Class, taught a Discipleship Training Class, and served as a Deacon.
He graduated from Dexter High School in 1954, working with the Dublin Shirt Factory one year before joining the United States Air Force in 1955. He attended Park College in Illinois while on active duty in the Air Force, graduating with an Associate’s degree.
Ed retired from the United States Air Force with 22 years of service, traveling to Greenland, England, Philippines, Africa, Vietnam, and several places within the United States. While in the Air Force, he received the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with four oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a life member of the Air Force Association.
After retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Achord was employed by Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base where he was Supervisor of the Technical Data Branch. He retired in 1995 and returned to Dublin, GA. He was the past president of the Dublin Hemerocallis Society and grew daylilies as a hobby. He was also an active member of the Middle Georgia Daylily Society.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Myrna Woodard Achord; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lajean and Richard Rodewald, Warner Robins, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, Nathaniel Rush and Vickie Achord, Dublin, GA; a step-daughter Tammy Lane, Rentz, GA, and step-son, Tal Fountain, Rentz, GA; 3 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, 6 great-grandsons, and 2 great-granddaughters.
