Donald Riley Jones, age 87, passed away in Warner Robins, Georgia, Tuesday, May 31, 2022, surrounded by family. He was born March 30, 1935, in Cadwell, Georgia, and was a lifelong resident of Laurens County. He is pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Imogene Jones, who passed in August of 2021. He was also pre-deceased by his parents Robert Lewis Jones and Lois Jones of Cadwell and his oldest brother Robert Julian Jones (Betty) of Warner Robins. He is survived by his loving brothers Ralph (Judy) Jones of Warner Robins and Glenn (Donna) Jones of Macon and a host of nieces and nephews. Don is also survived by his sons Craig Jones (Teresa) from Warner Robins, Ga, and David Jones (Karen) from Cleveland Tn. He was most especially proud of his 4 grandchildren, Brandon Jones (Rachel) of Perry, Ga, Taylor Jones Felcan (Justin) also of Warner Robins, Emily Puckett (Chris) of Hendersonville, Tn, and Michael Jones also of Cleveland, Tn. His most recent joy has been his great-grandchildren, Hudson Jones also of Perry, Ga, and Renna Puckett also of Hendersonville, Tn.
Don graduated from Cadwell High School and has been a lifelong Dublin/Laurens County resident. Don was a Korean War veteran who proudly represented the Air Force and played basketball while there, winning the Far East Service title, which he loved to talk about! After leaving service he returned home, working at J. P. Stevens initially. He later joined Lovett and Tharpe Hardware downtown and quickly rose to store manager, where he worked for 25 years. Following this, Don worked for two years with Pitts Pontiac Buick as a Parts Manager. His love for retail and serving people took him back to the hardware business when he joined W Supply, which later became Choo Choo Build it Mart, where he joyfully worked for 20 more years, retiring in 2007 at the age of 72!
In his leisure time, Don was an avid outdoorsman and loved to bass fish and hunt. He loved sports of all kinds, first coaching little league baseball, then coaching and playing church basketball and softball for many years. There was nothing he loved better than his family and he especially enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren in his later years.
Don was proud of his service to the community and none was better than once he became a Christian. As a young man, he became a Deacon and actively served as Youth Director at Marie Baptist Church, Dublin for many years. He later became a Deacon and founding member of Liberty Baptist Church, Dublin where he and Gene served in many roles helping grow the Church. In his later years, he loved being a greeter and everyone at Liberty knew Mr. Don. His tireless love for people and his willingness to witness and share the gospel with any and everyone has blessed many lives here in this community and around the world. In his later years, Don also loved serving and being a part of the Exchange Club of Dublin where he continued to build great friendships and enjoy St. Patrick’s Pancake Suppers! He will truly be missed by all.
Visitation and viewing are scheduled for 9:30-11 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2022, at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home, followed by a service in the Chapel at 11 a.m. A graveside tribute will follow afterward at Dublin Memorial Gardens.
