Eugene Talmadge Heuett, lovingly known to friends and family as Governor Talmadge, passed away on December 19, 2025, at the age of 83, in Vidalia, Georgia. Born on the 28th of August, 1942, in the small town of Soperton, Georgia, Talmadge was a son of the South, imbued with the values of hard work, commitment to family, and a deep-rooted faith.
Talmadge was predeceased by his devoted wife, Gloria Gayle Roach Heuett, who was his comrade in life’s journey, his pillar of strength, and loving mother to their children. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Eugene Heuett and Ollie Mae Heuett Dixon, step father, Charlie Dixon ,as well as his siblings, Mildred Graham Tanner, Clyde Heuett, and Ann Lowery, and his grandson, Karson Matthew Logue.
His legacy is carried on by his cherished daughters, Shela Spivey (Owen) of Rockledge; Donna Horne (Robert) of Vidalia and Tina Conner (Brian) of East Dublin; and his son, the namesake of his father’s strength, Lonnie "Gene" Heuett of Rockledge. Talmadge's memory will live on in the hearts of his adoring grandchildren: Danielle Owens (John), Hannah Logue (Dylan), Cheyenne Conner, Vicky Bush (Brandon), Gina Copeland (Nathan), and Brianna Heuett (Noah Way), L.J. Serving with pride as a United States Army Veteran, Talmadge carried the lessons of duty and service throughout his life, contributing his skills and labor to Graham Brothers Construction Company from which he retired after years of committed service. As a man of faith, Talmadge was a dedicated member of Eastside Baptist Church, where he lived out his Christian beliefs through both words and examples.
Talmadge was a man of many interests. He found solace in his knowledge as a mechanic, upholding the tradition of self-reliance and ingenuity. His passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for hunting and fishing, activities that not only served as a source of relaxation but also as an opportunity to bond with family and friends. He wielded a green thumb with his gardening, nurturing plant life in his yard, and planting his garden to feed his family.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 26, 2025, at Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev Jeff Hadley and Rev. Matt Anderson will be officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday at the cemetery from 10:00 AM until service time.
