George Gilbert Turner was born in rural Emanuel County near Twin City, Georgia, on September 29, 1934, to the late Shellie E. Turner and Veda M. Turner. He attended ECI in Twin City, where he earned 11 athletic letters, Baseball (4), Football (4), and Track (3). Upon graduation in 1953, he earned a football scholarship to Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Ga. After 2 quarters at MGC, he transferred to Austin Peay State College in Clarksville, Tennessee, also on a football scholarship. He graduated in 1957 with a B. S. Degree.
He began dating Elizabeth Anne Edenfield, also of Twin City. In April 1960, they became engaged, and married on September 25, 1960. They were blessed with two children, Chris Turner (Sunny) of Winnsboro, S.C., and, Mary Beth Turner of Dublin, Ga. They were gifted with four grandchildren, Andrew Turner (deceased), Elizabeth Riley (Troy) of Columbia, S.C., Rion Turner (Grace) of Atlanta, Ga., and Emee E. Turner of Dublin, Ga, and one great-grandchild, George Riley.
Mr. Turner was invited to serve his country in 1957 by the U. S. Army. His posts were Ft. Gordon, Ft. Knox, and Ft. Richardson. After his honorable discharge from the U. S. Army, Mr. Turner moved to Dublin, Ga., where he worked as an Insurance and Claims Adjuster for 8 years. He then formed his own property and casualty agency. He retired in 2009 due to illness.
He joined Jefferson St. Baptist Church in 1960, along with his wife. There he taught The Berean Sunday School Class for 53 years. He served as Church Training Director, Deacon, Trustee, and various other committees of the church. He also served as a representative to the Laurens Baptist Association for many years. He served as chairman of the LBA for two years and was on the committee in securing the area missionary for the LBA.
Mr. Turner served as Chairman to the Trinity Christian School PTA for two years and as Chairman of the school board and trustees. He was instrumental in helping start the first football team for TCS and also called many of their football games.
Mr. Turner served on the Salvation Army executive board for many years. He was chairman for three years.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren; two brothers, Jerome (Sonya) Turner of Summertown, Ga., and Johnson Turner of Canoochee, Ga., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His homecoming with Christ was Friday, September 13, 2024.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Jefferson Street Baptist Church on Saturday, September 14th. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the service hour at the church.
Rev. Jay Moore and Rev. Kyle Giddens will officiate. Interment will follow at 4:00 PM at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church, near Twin City, Ga., with Rev. Jim Harrell officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends of the family, Berean Sunday School Class, and Deacons of Jefferson Street Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jefferson Street Baptist Church, 209 N. Jefferson Street, Dublin, GA 31021
