Dr. James L. Richardson Jr. passed away Friday, April 11 at 3 p.m. Dr. Richardson, 89, was born in Lerty, Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his mother Alma Eileen Joiner Richardson of Dudley, father, the late James Luttrell Richardson of Luttrellville, Va. and wife the late Ouida Hendley Richardson of Vienna, Ga.
He is survived by his wife Betty Bryant Richardson of Montrose; two sons James Joiner Richardson (Karen) of Bonaire and Pete Richardson (Lisa) of Warner Robins and daughter Alma Eugenia Richardson Herbst (Stephen) of Dudley; grandsons Steven Benjamin Richardson (Jordan) of Kathleen, Matthew James Richardson (Angelina) of Dallas, Ga., Jacob Joiner Richardson of Bonaire, great grandsons Nolan Richardson, Harris Richardson, and great granddaughter Charleigh Richardson (all of Kathleen).
Additionally, he is survived by his step-daughter Stacey Stokes (Mike) of Macon, step-son the late Steve Day, grandchildren Christopher Day, Aaron Day, Daniel Day, and Matthew Day, and great-grandchildren Hayden Day, William Day, and Leia Day.
Dr. Richardson served his creator through agriculture and education. After graduating from Dudley High School in 1953, he attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia. He was a basketball player while he earned an Associate’s degree and a Bachelor’s degree in science education. Later, he added a Master’s degree in science, a Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. Before beginning a teaching career, he served in the United States Marine Corps.
Afterward, he became a biology and chemistry teacher, a head coach in basketball, baseball, and golf and athletic director before moving into the administrative facet of education. In 33 years, he was an assistant principal, a principal, and an assistant superintendent. His principle positions served Twiggs County High School, Northside High School of Warner Robins, Dublin Junior High and Dublin High School. He also served as a leadership instructor and a headmaster of Twiggs Academy in Jeffersonville. As a coach during integration, he brought together students for common success through hard work, discipline, fundamentals, and teamwork. As an educator and administrator, he espoused the philosophy our best purpose is to make life better for the next generation.
In his retirement, he enjoyed reading military history, sailing on his boat, flying small aircraft, working on the genealogy of his family, traveling, and keeping up with the exploits of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Visitation is set for 1 to 2 p.m. at Montrose Baptist Church with the funeral service scheduled for 2 p.m. A private graveside service will follow at Dublin Memorial Gardens.
