James Coolidge Thigpen passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on August 26, 1934, to Herschel Thigpen and Ruby Darley Thigpen, James's life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and the importance of family.
James proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, a period of his life that instilled in him a sense of discipline and commitment that he carried into all his endeavors. After his military service, he returned to his roots as a hard-working farmer and grass cutter, roles that kept him connected to the land he loved. His professional journey also included a fulfilling career at J.P. Stevens/Forstman & Co., from which he retired, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and reliability.
Beyond his professional life, James was a pillar of the Wilkes Church of the Nazarene community. He served the church in numerous capacities, including as a Sunday School Teacher, Board Member, and mentor to the children. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him in every action and interaction. Those who knew him were touched by his faith-filled spirit and the handy skills he so generously shared.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Glenda Allen Thigpen; his parents, Herschel and Ruby Thigpen; and his brothers, Neal Lawton Thigpen and Roy Wesley Thigpen.
His legacy lives on through his cherished family: his children, Eston (Sheila) Thigpen; Barbara (Phil) Ellington, and Al (Becky) Soles. He was a proud grandfather to Jonathan (Jennifer) Thigpen, Cynthia (Emmanuel) Gontorwon, Jeffery (April) Ellington, Brian (Bridgett) Soles, Kelly (Brannon) Jones, Gracie (Caleb Howard) Fulghum. His joy was multiplied by his 22 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense happiness and pride to his life.
A funeral service celebrating Mr. Thigpen’s life will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Wilkes Church of the Nazarene with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Al Soles will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until service hour at the church.
