John P. Nowell, age 79, of Cumming, GA, passed away on January 2, 2021. He was born on June 27, 1941, in Athens, GA, and was the son of the late George Lewis Nowell, Sr. and Mary Ruth Garrison Nowell, both of Dublin, GA.
John enjoyed playing trombone in the Dublin High School band and playing guitar and singing in his spare time. After high school, John joined the Air Force and served his country with pride from 1959-63. After his military service, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in political science and later attended John Marshall Law School where he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence. He retired from General Motors Corporation after 30 years of service.
John was very gregarious and he was truly a lover of people who made everyone feel special. He put his love for God and his family above all else and embraced the local Baptist church in each community he lived. John achieved many things in his life including being a pilot, a world traveler, and a church deacon. He enjoyed researching family history, as well as Southern history. He loved being physically active, working out with his Silver Sneakers and Zumba groups.
John was a loving son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, and friend who had a smile and personality that would light up a room. The world is a dimmer place without him in it.
He is survived by his loving family including his daughter Deanna Nowell, his grandson Erik Nowell, and siblings: George Lewis Nowell, Jr. (Diane Borom Nowell), Amelia Nowell Landsman, Robert Nowell (Frances Patisaul Nowell), Lester Nowell (Mimi Fair Nowell), and Regina Nowell Holmes (Robert M. Holmes, Jr.), as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
A graveside service will be held at Northview Cemetery in Dublin, Georgia. John will be interred next to his parents on Saturday, January 9th, 2021, at 11 AM. During the graveside service & following, we request that everyone respect social distancing & current safety practices.
A second memorial service will be held at his annual family reunion in Panama City Beach, Florida, during Labor Day weekend 2021. Next to being with his family and friends, the beach was his favorite place to be.
