Kaye Cappel Graham died peacefully surrounded by her family on June 5, 2023, of complications from acute myeloid leukemia, diagnosed in the final hours of her life.
Kaye graduated from Thomasville High School in 1972 at sixteen. She earned a B.A. from Georgia Southern College in 1976. She taught special education at East Laurens High for 27.5 years. She also taught youth Sunday School for a decade at First Baptist Church and later children’s Sunday school at Minter Baptist. Assisting at FBC’s First Learning Center brought her immense joy in the past year.
She was born on August 8, 1955. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Graham who died last April; her father, Joseph Cappel; her mother, Lurline Smith Cappel; and her grandmother, aunts, and uncles, who raised her.
Kaye is survived by her two daughters and their families: Melissa Graham Meeks, Ph.D. (David and Will); Kimberly Graham Minick, DC (Keith and Aiden, Kipton, Finn); her sister, Jane Carter (Dick and Michael); and the first cousins who were her siblings, Stan Smith (Brenda) and Laura Smith Dyas (Bill).
A memorial service will be Saturday, June 10, at 2 PM at First Baptist Church, 405 Bellevue Avenue, Georgia, 31021, with visitation to follow.
Kaye loved to feed people. Her contributions at every church potluck always followed Paula Dean’s mantra: “If one stick of butter is good, two is better.” In Kaye’s honor, please take a meal to a shut-in. The family will not gather at Kaye’s home in Rockledge during this tender time.
