Larry Hutchinson Obituary

Larry Sumner Hutchinson, a devoted husband, proud father of three, and lifelong Georgia outdoorsman, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, in Dublin, Georgia, at the age of 83.

Born on November 28, 1941, in Rome, Georgia, Larry graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management. A proud “Ramblin’ Wreck,” he built a nearly 30-year career in the textile industry, achieving highlights such as ranking #1 in U.S. sales for his company before retiring.

Larry tried to catch every Yellow Jackets football game — which, as his family knew well, was never just a game. As his wife Karen once heard him reply, “Yeah, you say that… as long as your Bulldogs win the November showdown!”

He was happiest on the family farmland, tending to the cattle operation and soaking in the beauty of the outdoors. A passionate musician, fisherman, camper, and wildlife enthusiast, Larry passed on that love for music and nature to his children. He also found joy in restoring vintage cars, watching sunsets by the pond, savoring fresh seafood, and spending quiet moments with the love of his life, Karen.

A man of deep commitment, Larry dedicated countless hours to the Key Memorial Foundation, serving in leadership roles and supporting Kea’s United Methodist Church with steadfast devotion. He was also proud to count himself a member of both Dublin’s Elks Lodge #1646 and later, Moose Lodge #1609.

A tireless rescuer of animals in need, Larry welcomed many a stray puppy and kitten into his home and heart. In his later years, rescue poodle Bebe became the apple of his eye — often riding in his lap wherever he went.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Karen Proctor Hutchinson; his daughter, Kelly (Rob) Berick; his son, Kade Bond Proctor Hutchinson; his sister, Mary Ann (Don) Vessey; niece Dulaney (David) Zullig; niece Julia (Joshua) Hebron; grandsons Joseph Maxwell Berick and William Robert Berick. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Erin Hutchinson, his mother, Willie Lou Sumner Hutchinson, and his father, James L. “Sammy” Hutchinson.

Details regarding a memorial service will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dublin-Laurens County Humane Society, 618 Firetower Road, Dublin, GA 31021, (478) 279-0681.
