Margaret Ellen Spivey, age 88, of East Dublin, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9, 2020, at Fairview Park Hospital under the care of Serenity Hospice.
Mrs. Spivey was a lifetime resident of Laurens County and was born January 9, 1932, to the late Charlie and Lillie Mae Loyd Norris. She was a graduate of Wilkes High School and attended Middle Georgia College obtaining a Computer Degree. She later graduated from the United School of Music with a degree in Music and was awarded the Georgia School of Excellence Award in 1949 by Governor Herman Talmadge.
Mrs. Spivey loved her church and was a dedicated member of Union Baptist Church, never missing a service in forty-five years. She volunteered and served the church in many capacities, most notably as a Sunday School Teacher, W.M.U. Member, and member of the Church Choir. She was also a member of the Woodmen of the World and volunteered as a Cub Scout Leader, and worked as a substitute teacher at East Laurens High School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Ovid Spivey, Jr.; daughter, Gail Spivey Lee; sister, Myrtle Norris Smith; brother, Hubert Norris, and brother-in-law, Rueben Smith.
Mrs. Spivey is survived by her son, Gary Spivey (Rosie), of Dublin; grandchildren, Bryan Spivey (Krystal), of Soperton, Daniel Spivey (Amanda), and Michael Spivey, both of Dublin, and Abigail Lee and Joe Lee, both of Bryon; son-in-law, David Lee, of Bryon; great-grandchildren, Walker Spivey, Ethan Spivey, Skylar Spivey, and Layne Spivey, all of Dublin; sister-in-law, Mildred Norris; brother-in-law, James A. Spivey (Betty), of East Dublin; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Mrs. Spivey will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 2:00 PM in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Jordy Barwick will officiate.
