Martha Strickland Obituary

Martha Fordham Strickland, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully under Hospice care at Twelve Oaks Assisted Living Center in Dublin, GA on March 16, 2021, at the age of 104. 

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, March 21, at Dublin Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Cliff Morris officiating with remarks from Debbie Whittemore and John Strickland, Jr.  Serving as pallbearers are J.T. Bowers, Robert Strickland, Dr. Jackson Fordham, Joel M. Fordham, Jr., Charley Whittemore, and Andy Waldrop.  The family will receive friends from 2 pm until the service hour at the cemetery.

Mrs. Strickland was born November 29, 1916, in Dublin, GA.  She was the daughter of the late James R. Fordham and Bessie Cook Fordham.  She was preceded in death by her husband, J. M. “Mack” Strickland, and her brothers, C. E. Fordham, Hugh Fordham, J. M. “Skeet” Fordham, James J. Fordham, and her sister, Edith Fordham.

She is survived by her son, John C. Strickland, Sr. (Deborah) of Dublin, her grandson, John C. Strickland, Jr. (Lori) of Dublin, her granddaughter, Kimberly Bowers (Mark) of Dublin, two great-grandsons, Robert Strickland and J. T. Bowers of Dublin, and two great-granddaughters, Lauren Strickland and Katelynn Bowers of Dublin.  She is also survived by three nephews, Joel M. Fordham, Jr., Dr. Jackson Fordham, and Andy Waldrop, and five nieces, Debbie Whittemore, Anne Moore, Janey Morris, Eve Marks, and Lynn Williams.

Martha grew up and was baptized and attended Poplar Springs North Baptist Church in her early years.  She attended Poplar Springs School in her grammar school days and graduated from Dublin High School as an Honor Graduate in 1935.  She has been a member of First Baptist Church in Dublin since 1957, serving as a Sunday School Teacher for the 5-year-olds for many years.    She was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School class.  She was a member of several garden clubs in Dublin throughout the years.  She worked for Sears in Atlanta as a bookkeeper before working as a cashier at First Federal Savings and Loan Assn in Dublin.    She retired from Georgia Federal Savings.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, Dublin, GA.
