Beloved wife, mother, MeMe, sister, and friend, Mary Gail Knight passed away on October 4 at her residence in Dublin, Georgia, following an extended illness. She was named for her mother’s twin and her father’s younger sister who passed away in childhood. The daughter of William Clifton and Martha Harper Fussell, Mrs. Knight was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on February 23, 1948, and grew up in Wray, Georgia. A good student and graduate of Irwin County High School, she married her sweetheart, Wayman David Knight, on August 13, 1966. They were married for 59 years.
Mrs. Knight dedicated her adult years to caring for her children and other loved ones, including her mother, her mother-in-law, and granddaughters. She was an innovative and resourceful cook who loved baking. Her cinnamon rolls, yeast rolls, and Friday night homemade pizzas were legendary. She also enjoyed music, art projects, and gardening. She was a dear friend to many, with a gentle nature that never masked her sense of humor. Baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she was a member of the Kingdom Hall in Dublin, Georgia, she devoted herself to her congregation and often shared her faith with others. “Well done, good and faithful servant”. Matthew 25:21.
Mrs. Knight will be laid to rest in a private service. Her nephew, Shane Knight, will offer words and scriptures of comfort and hope with her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Barbara Fussell, of Wray, Georgia. She is survived by her husband; a son, Andrew Knight; and a daughter and two granddaughters, Lori Knight Bates and Peyton and Gracen Bates, all of Laurens County. She is also survived by her brother, Clifton (Gloria) Fussell of Douglas; her sister, Lorraine Fussell of Social Circle; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at Rentz City Cemetery with her nephew, Shane Knight officiating.
