Mary Avis Sheppard Underwood, age 92, passed away surrounded by her loving family Monday, December 4, 2023.
Mrs. Underwood was born in Jefferson, Georgia on July 9, 1931 to the late Wesley Herbert Sheppard, Sr. and the late Avis Lorene Sheppard. She was a member of Graham Memorial Church of the Nazarene. She attended Dublin Church of God in her later years. She retired from Forstmann after working many years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed participating in the Honey Bee Group at Dublin Church of God. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, C.E. “Mutt” Underwood; son, Kenneth Edward Underwood; a son-in-law, Michael R. Horton; brother, Wesley Herbert Sheppard Jr.; and sisters, Ester Senn, Opal Slappey, Anna Mae Mason, Martha Brantley, Patsy Tenhoor, Nell Daniels and Johnnie Faye Graham.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Geneva Williams (Kim) of Ava, Missouri; daughter, Sheryl Horton of Moncks Corner, South Carolina; daughter, Anita Cochran (Monty) of Dublin; son, Ted H. Underwood (Tammy) of Cottageville, South Carolina; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Wanza Soles of Dublin.
Services for Mrs. Underwood will be held Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Dublin Church of God with interment to follow at Graham Memorial. Rev. Steve Hardeman will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 6, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Bryant, Monty Cochran, Jon Robert Barton, Zachary Miller, Wes Underwood, and Justin Lubbehusen.
