Obituary

John Pierce Bedingfield, 69, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2023, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born and raised in Dublin, GA, Pierce was the second son of Roy and Ethel Orr Bedingfield. He was predeceased by his older brother, Roy E. Bedingfield, Jr.\Pierce attended Dublin High School, graduating in the class of 1971. In addition to excelling academically, he played many sports including baseball, where he had the highest batting average in his senior year.

He attended Georgia Southern University (GSU) to study physics and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Soon after graduation in 1975, he went to work for Georgia Power as a physicist at the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant. About ten years later, Pierce decided to pursue a career in law, earning a J.D. from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. After being admitted to the Georgia Bar Association in 1987, he moved to Atlanta, where he worked for several different law firms specializing in bankruptcy.

After the passing of his mother in 2002, Pierce returned to Dublin and worked in various roles including that of an assistant public defender for Laurens, Johnson, Treutlen, and Twiggs counties. Towards the end of his career and up until he retired, he clerked for Judge H. Gibbs Flanders, Jr.

In addition to excelling in academics and sports, he was always active in the community in which he resided. After relocating to Dublin, Pierce frequently attended and taught Sunday school at First United Methodist Church.

Pierce was a remarkable man and will be greatly missed by all he leaves behind, including his cousin Holly Pierce Mock, two nieces, Rachel Bedingfield (Ueli Albert) and Maddie Sparks (Chris Sparks), and a nephew, Trey Bedingfield.

A Graveside Service will be held to celebrate the life of Pierce on September 16th, at 11:00 a.m., at Northview Cemetery, 1225 N Franklin St, Dublin, GA. Visitation will follow at the graveside. Family and close friends will meet for lunch at 12:30 p.m. at First Methodist Church, 305 W Gaines St, Dublin, GA.
