Sarah Ellen Pope

Sarah Ellen Pope, 88, of Dublin, Georgia, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born on December 11, 1935, in Dublin, Georgia, she was the beloved daughter of the late Don H. Barfield and Ellen Perry Barfield. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Hilton Pope, Sr., granddaughter, Nikki Allen, as well as her sister, Jean Benford, and brother-in-law, Grady Benford. She was known for her gentle nature, loving heart, and unwavering kindness, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished.

During her youth, Sarah attended Dublin High School, where she displayed her musical talent as a skilled trumpeter in the school band. Throughout her working years, she found fulfillment and success in various positions, including her employment at JP Stevens, Bassett Furniture, and her eventual retirement from Gay Wood Company after dedicating 25 years of loyal service.

Deeply devoted to her faith, Sarah was a lifelong member of Marie Baptist Church, where she found solace, guidance, and a strong sense of community. She cherished her involvement in the Faith Sunday School Class and found great joy in worshiping alongside her fellow church members.

Beyond her professional and spiritual endeavors, Sarah had a passion for baking. She was renowned for her mouthwatering lemon pound cake, a treat that brought comfort and delight to those fortunate enough to savor it.

She is survived by her children, Irvin (Debbie) Pope and Donna (Larry) Wilkes; her grandchildren, Mandy (Tom) Gilder, Michael (Brittany) Pope, Lauri (Jason) Bullen, Matthew (Robbie) Wilkes, and Eric (Danielle) Allen. Sarah was also blessed with the joy of great-grandchildren, Tinley Allen, Laney Allen, Gracie Wood, Maggie Wood, R.T. Gilder, McKinley Wilkes, Hilton Wilkes, Sam Bullen, Owen Bullen, Abram Pope, Jensen Pope, and Huxley Pope.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Northview Cemetery with Rev. Bobby Hutto officiating. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 9:30 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Wilkes, Michael Pope, Eric Allen, Tom Gilder, Jason Bullen and Sammy Smith.
