Scott Jeffrey Key died peacefully at the age of 69 after a short but intense battle with cancer on September 1, 2024, at his home in Dublin, Georgia. Scott was born in Westerville, Ohio, April 3, 1955. At the age of two he was adopted by Billy and Sunshine Key. At the time Rev. Key was serving the St. Mary’s Methodist Church in St. Mary’s, Georgia. Scott was the biological nephew of Sunshine Key. Scott and his brother, Todd, immediately became beloved members of the Key family.
Scott was a gentle person who was easy to love. He enjoyed his growing up years in Methodist parsonages around South Georgia. He loved to wrestle with Todd and participate in the various games and activities of the family. He graduated from Tift County High School in 1973. He was a member of the wrestling team at Tift County. Scott loved the outdoors and loved camping. Always enjoying drawing and art, after high school he took training in the creation of stained glass. He later moved to Athens, Georgia, where he worked as a butcher, a trade he would continue the rest of his life. He met and married Norma Freeman in 1979. In 1991 Norma gave birth to a son, Jeffrey. In the years to follow Norma was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which eventually took her life in 2000.
After a time of grieving, Scott and Jeffrey moved to Dublin where his sister Betsy Key Moran and her family supported them in the transition to a new community. Scott became known to many people in the Dublin community as part of the meat department at Kroger. He was known to people of all ages as a friendly employee and hard worker, still going to work just a few weeks before his death. Scott attended First Methodist Church in Dublin.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Norma Freeman Key, his biological sisters Lisa Robinson Childs and Marsha Robinson, his biological brother, Brock Robinson., and his adopted father, William R. Key. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Key, his adopted mother Mildred V. (Sunshine) Key, his sisters Brenda Key Adams (Don), Betsy Key Moran (Keith), his brothers, Danny Key (Kris) and Todd (Janice).
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 6, at 11:00 a.m.at Pine Forest Methodist Church. Visitation will take place at 10:30 a.m. A private interment will be held September 7 in Athens.
