William Smith Obituary

William Hardy Smith, a beloved family patriarch, treasured veteran, and respected community member, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, in Macon at the age of 89. Born on January 1, 1936, in Soperton to Hardy H. Smith and Lillian Crumley Smith, William's journey through life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his loved ones and his country.

William grew up in a lively household with siblings whom he loved deeply; though Wilmer Smith, Elaine Allgood, Gary Smith, and Darrell Smith have predeceased him, their bond remains an unbroken circle of familial love. He leaves behind his devoted siblings, Linda O'Connor (Roy), Wedrell Smith, Ronald Smith, and David Smith (Paula), who’s shared memories will continue to honor William's rich legacy.

His heart belonged to his beloved wife of 66 years, Elsa Cauley Smith, with whom he built a beautiful life until she passed away earlier this year on May 13, 2025. That day also saw the loss of his son, Wendell Smith, whose memory will forever be cherished by those he loved.

William served his nation with honor in the United States Army, a reflection of the courage and patriotism that defined his character. After his service, he returned to his community, where he was not only known as a reliable neighbor and friend but also a man of steadfast principles and kindness.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Patricia Howard (Dan) of Gray, GA, and Ellen Clifton (Steven) of Dublin, who will continue to uphold the family virtues instilled by their father. His daughter-in-law, Wendy Smith of Montrose, GA, remains a testament to the strength and resolve of the family. William's legacy will live on through his cherished grandchildren, Scott Howard (Samantha), Madison Howard, Jackson Smith, Carson Smith, and Caroline Smith, and his adored great-grandchild, Jude Howard, all of whom brought immense joy and pride into his life.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on December 13, 2025, in the Mary Whitaker Townsend Memorial Chapel. Rev. Dwayne Clements and Rev. Byron Smith will officiate. William’s family will receive friends one hour prior to service time on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Scott Howard, Jackson Smith, Carson Smith, Heath Smith, Steven Clifton, and Dan Howard will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be private.
