Roy Cowart, age 99, of Valdosta, Ga. entered his heavenly home on April 16, 2024. He was born in Adel, Ga. on December 19, 1924, to the late Thomas Watson and Pearlie McQuaig Cowart. In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Letha Sutton Cowart; his brothers, Raymond, T.W., Jairus, Myron, and Claude; as well as his sisters; Sarah, Clyde, and Madelon.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Roy Glenn and Darlene Cowart of Dublin; his grandchildren, Megan, Isaac and Cody Cowart; and brother, Richard (Glenda) Cowart along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.
As a young man, Roy was honored to serve his country in World War II as a Naval, seaplane airman. Across the years, he shared many stories from wartime. One of his family’s favorites was the writing of a “trunk full” of love letters to his sweetheart back home. Upon returning from service, his sweetheart, Letha Sutton, became his beloved wife of 75 years.
Roy and Letha worked alongside each other for almost 40 years in the Strickland Cotton Mill of Remerton, Ga. Upon the closing of the mill, he went on to begin a 27-year career at the Langdale Timber Company. Friends and co-workers often tell of the hard work and grit of Mr. Roy.
While his work years and service to his country are notable, Roy is most remembered for his unwavering faith in the Lord. He has left his family and all who knew him, a legacy of perseverance and determination to trust the Lord in all things. He led his family well and they rejoice today that he is home with his sweetheart and his Savior in heaven.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2024, in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home in Dublin, Ga. The family will receive friends and loved ones, one hour prior to the service. A family, graveside committal will follow at 2 p.m. in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens, located in Valdosta, Ga.
